Do people with scoliosis find pilates beneficial?

Yes, they can and do – Pilates is a full-body conditioning exercise that helps improve balance, posture, muscle tone, and joint mobility, as well as relieve stress and tension.

What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a condition where the spine bends and curves sideways, commonly causing an S or C shape in the spine. Most cases of scoliosis are mild and can go unnoticed for many years. However, some cases can be quite severe and can get worse as the body grows and ages. Severe scoliosis can be debilitating for the individual.

Signs and symptoms of scoliosis may include:

  • Shoulder imbalances
  • Protruding shoulder blade
  • Uneven waist
  • Uneven hips
  • Back pain
  • Compromised breathing

In cases of severe scoliosis, the spine can twist and rotate, in addition to the sideways curvature. This can cause the ribs to protrude on one side of the body.
